What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of optimizing a website to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs) for relevant keywords and queries. This increases the site’s visibility and attracts more organic traffic, with the goal that these visitors will turn into future sales. Examples of search engines include Google, Bing, Yahoo, and others. Most of the time, people associate search engines with only Google, as it has maintained a dominant position in the global search engine market, holding a 89.62% market share as of March 2025.
SEO has different definitions that mean the same:
- SEO is a digital marketing strategy that involves helping a website increase its visibility by ranking higher in search engines’ organic (non-paid) listings, which ultimately enhances visibility, credibility, and conversions.
- SEO is the process of optimizing any given search term or query for a search engine on your site.
- Search Engine Optimization is commonly known as the practice of helping a website appear in the first positions of Google’s organic (free) search results.
In simple terms, SEO helps your website appear higher in search results when people search for things related to your business or content. Consider that SEO is a long-term game; patience is required, as new brand websites can take from six months to a year to rank well.
Why is SEO important?
SEO is essential because it can drive a significant amount of free, targeted traffic. Think of SEO as your 24-hour salesman for your company. No matter what time of the day or what country people are in, when they’re searching, you can be found, you’re getting traffic, and some of it will end up converting into sales.
Quote: “If it isn’t on Google, it doesn’t exist.” – Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia.
Hence, make sure your brand appears first on Google to be Top of Mind with your potential customers.
Along with Google Ads (Pay-Per-Click, PPC), SEO is also a key component of the Search Engine Marketing (SEM) strategy.
The advantages of applying SEO to your business compared to PPC are that if you stop paying for paid ads on Google or Meta (Facebook and Instagram), your traffic will decrease. However, with SEO, you can still generate traffic even if you stop for a period.
